When it comes to arthritis, unfortunately, there are no known cures but there are ways that we can help ease joint pain and inflammation.
There are supplements out there that you can add to your daily treatment plan that can help you or a loved one who has arthritis. Of course, not all supplements will suit everyone this is why we are sharing a number of supplement ideas for you to review.
Supplements to Help Treat Arthritis Pain:
Ginger
Ginger is a root that is usually ground into a powder for both sweet and savory dishes. It can help aid treat indigestion and nausea as well as help reduce inflammation caused by arthritis.
You can purchase ginger capsules or if you prefer you can eat ginger freshly grated. We are a big fan of ginger tea or perhaps a freshly baked ginger muffin.
NOTE: For anyone who is using a blood-thinning medication, you should avoid ginger as they do not work well with one another.
Curcumin/Turmeric
Curcumin is from the Turmeric root and it is said to have many health benefits. It can help decrease inflammation in diabetes, heart disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and cancer.
What we are happy to share is that it is seen to be extremely beneficial in reducing inflammation and improve symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Resveratrol
Resveratrol is an antioxidant – one that you would find in fruit with purple skin such as blueberries and grapes. It can also be found in red wine and peanuts. Resveratrol supplements may help reduce inflammation from arthritis and ease the pain.
NOTE: Those on blood-thinning medication should avoid until they have spoken with their doctor.
Fish Oils
Fish oils like Omega 3 fatty acids are well known to help with inflammation from arthritis. Of course, to see any benefit you would need to eat fatty fish such as salmon and mackerel two or more days a week.
The good news though, you can get fish oil supplements instead. This is a great idea for those who aren’t big on eating fish.
Please Note: Fish oils can thin the blood. For those taking blood thinners or aspirin please consult your doctor before taking.
Glucosamine & Chondroitin Sulfate
Glucosamine and Chondroitin are good to help those with osteoarthritis. The two supplements help promote cartilage formation and repair.
NOTE: Glucosamine should be avoided by anyone who is allergic to shellfish. It is taken from shrimp, crab, and other crustaceans.
Supplements can be a great tool to help manage your arthritis, but they should not be the only contributing factor. Your treatment plan should also include exercise, physical therapy, and a healthy diet, etc.
There are several treatments out there that you and your doctor can explore when it comes to treating arthritis. Feel free to read more on the HSE Website about Arthritis.
