Shared by Lynda, just after Mother’s Day
After another Mother’s Day filled with flowers, chocolates, and cards, Lynda Molloy from Offaly reached out to share a story about the best gift she’s ever given her mum—one that made a real, lasting difference.
“She’s impossible to buy for,” Lynda laughs. “If I got her one more vase or set of candles, she’d probably kill me!”
But as Lynda watched her mum Anne getting older, she realised that the best gift wouldn’t be decorative—it would be practical. Something that could make day-to-day life a little easier, while still showing just how much she cares.
Supporting an Independent Mum
Anne Molloy is in her 80’s. A proud, independent woman, she raised her two children on her own after the loss of her husband, working hard and doing everything herself.
“She’s strong and stubborn,” Lynda says. “She never complains. But I could see the small things becoming harder—especially making her tea. She drinks about 15 to 20 cups a day, and I noticed she’d wince in pain when lifting the kettle. But she’d never say a word.”
Anne had undergone multiple back surgeries and was now living with arthritis in her hands, making it hard to grip or lift safely.
“I started to worry,” Lynda says. “She never asks for help, but I thought—what if she burns herself one day? There had to be something out there that could help.”
Finding a Safer Way to Make Tea
That’s when Lynda discovered the Uccello Kettle—a tilt-to-pour kettle designed specifically for those with reduced strength or mobility.
“I couldn’t believe it when I found it,” she says. “It looked perfect. She wouldn’t have to lift anything heavy. You just tip it to pour. And you can fill it with a jug—no lifting needed at all.”
But practicality wasn’t the only benefit. “It’s actually gorgeous,” Lynda adds. “I found one that matched her kitchen. It doesn’t look medical or bulky. It fits in beautifully.”
A Kitchen Surprise
Lynda waited until Anne was out for the day before setting the kettle up on her kitchen counter.
“She came home, looked at it and said, ‘What’s that?’” Lynda laughs. “When I showed her how it worked, she thought it was brilliant!”
From that moment on, tea time changed completely.
“I don’t have to go into shops and test every kettle anymore,” Anne says. “I used to try and find the lightest ones, but even those would get heavy. Now, I just tip it—it does all the work. And it’s so easy to clean.”
A Gift That Truly Meant Something
For Lynda, the biggest benefit is peace of mind.
“I know she’s safe,” she says. “And more importantly, she still feels independent. That’s everything.”
Anne agrees.
“It was such a thoughtful gift,” she says. “I’ve already recommended it to my sisters. It really is a great help.”
The Take Away
While many people are still searching for the perfect gift for elderly mums, Lynda says the answer might be simpler than you think.
“Forget the flowers,” she says. “Find something that actually makes life easier. That kettle has made a huge difference for my mum. It’s the best gift I’ve ever given.”
