The first Wednesday of November each year is known as Stress Awareness Day. It is an opportunity for us all to take a moment to think about our wellbeing (mentally & physically) and how we might overcome stress or stressful periods in our lives.
Today’s world is choc-full of stress triggers with the adage of Covid-19, the increase in inflation and the war between Ukraine & Russia just to mix things up.
It can be difficult to navigate a way through the smoke when stress has taken hold but that is why we are here today. To help shed some light on the subject and share what we believe are some amazing stress busters.
What Exactly is Stress?
Stress is basically our body’s reaction to a challenge or a demand. It does not necessarily have to be a bad thing. It’s the short bursts of stress that can help us, for instance, to avoid danger or to meet a deadline.
It is when we have prolonged bouts of stress that it starts to take its toll on our bodies and our minds.
Common Causes of Stress:
- Work
- Money
- Relationships with partners, children, other family members
- Sudden changes – Unemployment, bereavement, changes in your living situation
Unfortunately, there isn’t one fix that suits all solutions to coping with stress. While one person may find it relaxing to learn something new like how to play an instrument. Another person may find it too demanding and frustrating.
Over the years, we all know what it is that can help us relax. For those of you who are looking for a new way to let off steam, we have a few ideas.
Getting a Good Night’s Sleep
The average adult needs between 7 – 9 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night. With a busy home or work schedule, this can be hard to achieve. Give yourself some time to adjust and focus on a new bedtime routine that now includes 7-9 hours of sleep.
Meditation/Yoga
There are many free to view videos online these days (YouTube) or even apps you can download to your phone to help with meditation and yoga.
They can be done anytime throughout the day. The whole point is to help you take 10 minutes out of the day just for you. A chance to catch your breath and as the saying goes, and smell the roses.
If these are not for you, perhaps taking small breaks throughout the day for a cup of tea with your very own Uccello Kettle or to take 10 deep breaths can help.
Relax & Recharge:
It can be difficult to relax and recharge now Covid numbers back on the rise and a slice of bread needing a mortgage to buy. Usually, we would have recommended going for a massage, taking a vacation, or a day trip.
But, due to the increased cost of products and services, why not enjoy the same luxuries at home?
What about taking a relaxing bath or longer shower to help you unwind or even a leisurely walk where you can take in the sites.
Perhaps even a challenging workout at home is just the ticket. Aerobic exercise gets your heart rate up and releases endorphins (the feel-good hormone).
A New Hobby:
Taking up a new hobby can help take your mind off stressful situations. It allows you to immerse yourself in something new and it is a great way to learn new things.
I myself, have taken to learning how to crochet and it is a fun and relaxing hobby. I won’t win any awards for my work just yet, but it is helping to keep me sane.
Whether you follow our guide or have something else that better helps you to relax during these challenging times, we hope you are safe and well.
