In general, some of us can find it difficult to keep active at the best of times but when the winter months roll in it’s even more difficult.
The longer evenings tend to increase fatigue and the cold can cause arthritis pain to flare up. Unfortunately, a lack of physical activity can have a negative effect on both our physical and mental wellbeing. This is why it is so important to keep moving all year long.
With that in mind and COVID-19 still hanging around, we’ve come up with a few ideas to help you keep active this winter at home. You don’t have to go further than your own garden or front door if you don’t want to. Feel free to comment below if you have other great ideas for keeping active at home, we’d love to hear them.
Taking Short Active Breaks Throughout the Day:
Short stints of activity such as dancing, cleaning, gardening, or walking can help keep you active and alert throughout the day. Do make sure not to overexert yourself. Taking part in daily exercise is not meant to leave you in pain or feeling uncomfortable. Do what you can.
Follow An Online Exercise Class:
The world has gone digital. Whether it was ready to or not, COVID-19 has pushed the world to go digital in order to keep us safer. Take full advantage of this and find yourself a YouTube channel that shares the best exercises for you to do at home. Feel free to check out the list we have below;
- Ellas Wheelchair Workouts
- Ask Doctor Jo – great exercises for those with arthritis
- The Body Coach – Simple 10-minute exercise plans for seniors at home
Keep It Interesting:
While you exercise/workout at home there is no law against watching your favourite show at the same time – it will feel easier. You could also listen to your favourite podcast to a radio show. For those fans of Ryan Tubridy, your workout could be done early in the morning with his show at 9 am. You then have the day to yourself.
Try Something New:
Just because you are at home doesn’t mean you are limited to a specific amount of activities. With next day delivery from online stores and great online tutorials and YouTube videos showing and teaching you new things.
The possibilities are endless, you could learn how to tango, take up a boxing class, learn Pilates, or even have your own Zen area in the house for yoga.
Relax:
What many people often forget is the importance of the cool down after a workout. You need to work on your stretches to help your muscles relax, calm your heart rate again, and ultimately relax.
How you relax is up to you, personally, I am a big fan of a cuppa after a winter walk. Nothing heats you up better. You could even make things even easier on yourself with our easy pour Uccello Kettle for your cool down cuppa.
Note: When it comes to engaging in any new exercise, please consult your doctor or physical therapist first.
